Safety Tips for Driving at Night

Different challenges are accompanied when travelling after sunset to reach your destination. Many people are unaware of the night driving dangers. The traffic fatality rates are three times more at night than day. Night vision is limited due to reduction in color / contrast recognition, depth perception and peripheral vision.

Here are tips you need to know about night driving:
- Turn your headlights on one hour before sunset and keep it on at least one hour after sunrise.
- Use your low beams when driving by street lighting, driving in fog, approaching other cars, or following a car closely. Use high beam headlights when driving in open country.
- Make sure all exterior vehicle lights work properly.
- Avoid glare by look toward the right side of the road and watch the white line marking the outside edge of the traffic lane instead of looking at oncoming headlights.
- Use the "day-night" feature to adjust your rearview mirror to cut out as much of the light reflection as possible.
- When streetlights cause a lot of glare, dim your dashboard lights and use your sun visor. Also, turn off lights inside your vehicle.
- Keep inside and outside of your windows as well as your headlights, tail-lights and signal lights clean.
- Keep your eyes moving and look for flashes of light that may indicate of other vehicles.
- Increase your following distance to four to five seconds to give yourself more time to respond.
- Travel at lower speeds to allow enough time or distance to stop.
- Ensure good ventilation inside the vehicle and take frequent refreshment breaks. Take a power nap, a brisk walk, or have some caffeine to help you stay alert.
- Make sure your exterior mirrors that are properly adjusted.
- Wear night driving glasses or anti-reflective coating (AR)prescription eyeglasses to improve vision at night.

The Most and Least Expensive 2010 Vehicles to Insure

The Porsche Carrera 911 GT2 two-door coupe is the most expensive 2010 vehicle to insure and the Mazda Tribute I (2WD four-door SUV) is the least expensive 2010 vehicle to insure, according to a new ranking of average premiums for 2010 models that Insure.com released this week. The Dodge Caliber is the least expensive car to insure, the GMC Canyon WT (2WD 2 Door 2.9L) is the least expensive pickup to insure, and the Honda Odyssey LX (5 Door 2WD SOHC) is the least expensive minivan to insure.

The rankings, which the insurance information and shopping site publishes annually, are based on the premium that a 40-year-old man with a good driving record, a good credit record and a 12-mile commute would pay annually.

The least expensive vehicles are ones you have to drive and no one wants to. The most expensive list includes cars that people don't have to drive but want to. The profile of the average person who drives a particular model has great influence on the average premiums for that vehicle because pricing for collision and comprehensive coverage is based on the model's "loss history." For example, small cars that are often driven by young, inexperienced drivers tend to be more expensive to insure.

In many ways, the "soccer mom" driving a minivan is among the best insurance customers — she is much less likely to make a claim because she generally doesn't drive during peak commuting hours, doesn't drive often late at night, and is probably not an aggressive driver. Car insurance rates also tend to rise with horsepower. The number of series available with 500 hp and up has exploded. The ideal insurance customer doesn't drive her car at all!

The 10 least expensive 2010 vehicles to insure
- 4 Cylinder Mazda Tribute I 2WD 4 Door Utility
- 6 Cylinder Honda Odyssey LX 5 Door 2WD SOHC Van
- 4 Cylinder Mazda Tribute I 4WD 4 Door Utility

- 6 Cylinder Toyota Sienna CE 4 Door Wagon
- 4 Cylinder Hyundai Tucson GLS 2WD 4 Door Utility
- 4 Cylinder Kia Sportage LX 2WD 4 Door Utility

The 10 most expensive 2010 vehicles to insure
- 6 Cylinder 2 Door Coupe Porsche 911 Carrera GT2

Car Maintenance Tips

Find out when to change the oil, how much to inflate tires, and what to avoid when washing your car.

Under normal driving conditions, most vehicles are designed to go 7,500 miles between oil changes. Automakers often recommend 3,000-mile intervals for severe driving conditions, such as constant stop-and-go driving, frequent trailer-towing, mountainous terrain, or dusty conditions. Changing oil more often helps the engine.

The automaker's recommended pressure is usually found on a doorjamb sticker, in the glove box, or on the fuel-filler door. Do not use the pounds-per-square-inch figure on the side of the tire, which is the maximum pressure that the tire can safely hold. Perform a monthly pressure check when tires are cold or after the car has been parked for a few hours.

If the fluid level drops to or below the Low mark on the reservoir, then either your brakes are worn out or fluid is leaking. Either way, get the brake system serviced immediately. You should also get a routine brake inspection when you rotate the tires, about every 6,000 to 7,000 miles.

Most vehicles run just fine on regular-grade (87 Octane) fuel. Using premium in these cars won't hurt, but it won't improve performance, either. A higher-Octane number simply means that the fuel is less prone to pre-ignition problems, so it's often specified for hotter running, high-compression engines.

Most owner's manuals recommend changing the coolant every five years or 60,000 miles. Of course, if the level in the coolant reservoir is chronically low, check for a leak and get service as soon as possible.

After a jump-start, it could take hours of driving to restore a battery's full charge, especially in the winter. A "load test" at a service station can determine whether the battery can still hold a charge. If so, some hours on a battery charger might be needed to revive the battery to its full potential.

Modern engines warm up more quickly when they're driven. And the sooner they warm up, the sooner they reach maximum efficiency and deliver the best fuel economy and performance. But don't rev the engine high over the first few miles while it's warming up.

Perform regular maintenance to keep your run well and last long. The maintenance items are specified in the vehicle owner's manual. Keep accurate records and receipts to back you up in case of a warranty dispute on a future repair. Check out Napa Car Dealers.

Dishwashing and laundry detergents can strip off a car's wax finish. Instead, use a car-wash liquid, which is formulated to clean without removing wax.

Tips for Finding the Right Vehicle that Fits Your Style and Wallet

(ARA) - In today’s economy, every dollar counts. If you need to purchase an expensive necessity item like a car you must do so with serious thought and attention to detail. Here are some things to consider.

First select a sturdy, efficient car that has a proven track record of performance and dependability. Thought must be given to a variety things including: type of car, size, gas mileage, maintenance, service contracts and insurance. Some cars carry a higher insurance premium due to the theft ratio. With the fluctuating price of gas, consider models that get the best gas mileage.

With the automotive industry in crisis, be on the lookout for over-zealous car dealers who are trying to turn every consumer visit to the dealership into an immediate sale. Shop around various dealerships for the best bargain you can find. It is important to be an informed shopper. Read the automotive section in the newspaper to become familiar with prices and deals available. An informed consumer can force the dealer to reduce his offer two or three times.

Consider your needs, lifestyle and road travel requirements. A mother with children who is active in the community car pool may consider an SUV to be the best fit. A business executive who often travels with clients, customers and potential customers may look for a more traditional four-door sedan as a good fit. A single person without a lot of family ties may be interested in a sporty, fast, two-seater vehicle as a perfect fit.

Make sure you select a car that is affordable for your budget and lifestyle. It is important to select a vehicle that will have a payment plan that allows easy manageability along with other financial obligations such as mortgage, rent, food, utilities and recreation. Buyers are encouraged to pay special attention to financing rates.

“Shop the financing before you buy. Buyers can be approved for a dollar amount and fill in the car later. Then check what the dealer is offering,” says Robert Lindquist, professor of business at Argosy University, Orange County.

Lindquist also recommends car buyers make sure that a low-interest quote is simple interest, and not add-on interest which doubles the rate and, ultimately, costs the consumer more.

In addition, Lindquist advises buyers to consider purchasing an extended warranty, particularly if you finance the car for longer than 36 months. The average car warranty is three years or 36,000 miles.

All of these factors are crucial when selecting the right vehicle for you. It is important that consumers are thoughtful in choosing a car that complements their lifestyle, and is affordable for their wallet.
